Mozambique: About 13M children living in poverty – Unicef
The Swedish government yesterday announced aid worth US$5 million (EUR 4.7 million euros) to support access to safe abortion in Mozambique in the context of the protection of sexual and reproductive rights.
In a statement sent to Lusa, the Swedish embassy in Maputo indicates that the program will focus on transmitting knowledge, highlighting opportunities and underpinning the capacity of women and girls in relation to abortion, care and means of contraception.
The initiative, the press release continues, would focus on Nampula province in the north of the country and Zambezia in the centre, the two provinces among the worst in terms of sexual and reproductive health indicators in Mozambique.
“Under this program, a significant effort will be made to ensure that stakeholders in the health system are sensitized, committed and have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide affordable and good-quality abortion services,” the statement reads.
The Swedish embassy in Maputo said that the initiative was part of the Law on Access to Safe Abortion which decriminalized abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and was approved by the Assembly of the Republic in 2014.
Figures from the Mozambican Ministry of Health indicate that about 11 percent of maternal deaths in the country are the result ofunsafe abortion and its clandestine nature. Currently, abortion services are available only in the urban southern provinces of the country.
