Chimoio, 18 May 2022 – Today, a delegation from the Folke Bernadotte Academy in Sweden, along with the Peace Process Secretariat (PPS), will co-facilitate a capacity building workshop on Social Cohesion and Gender Sensitive Reintegration for Government and Renamo disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration (DDR) focal points from the central provinces. Participants will also include members of the Joint Technical Working Groups for DDR and Monitoring and Verification, as well as Peace Clubs representatives.
The workshop, which will take place over three days (18-20 May) in Chimoio, Manica province, is designed to strengthen the role of the DDR focal points as agents for peace and reconciliation at the local level. Participants will learn best practices on gender-sensitive approaches to reintegration, and on the importance of building social cohesion so that communities can co-exist peacefully.
‘The United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) recognises that the involvement of women and girls in building a post-conflict society is a clear prerequisite for attaining sustainable peace and security. As such, ensuring a gender-sensitive reintegration process is an important element to this. Sweden is proud to support the WPS agenda in Mozambique by building capacities at the district and provincial level to allow for gender-sensitive reintegration and social cohesion’ said Mette Sunnergren, Ambassador of Sweden in Mozambique.
The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Mozambique, Mirko Manzoni, highlighted that ‘for effective reintegration to take place, we need to understand the needs, experiences and capacities of both female and male DDR beneficiaries and match them with relevant opportunities. We welcome the training provided by FBA as another step towards building local ownership which is key for the sustainability of the process. We fervently believe that women’s empowerment and participation in peacebuilding is critical to creating lasting peace.’
Sweden is a supporter of the peace process in Mozambique. The Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) is the Swedish government agency for peace, security and development, and has the overall mission to support international peace and crisis management operations.
