At least 16 companies, out of a total of 36 operating in the Révué River basin and its tributaries, were notified yesterday to suspend their activities, in compliance with a recent decision by the Council of Ministers aimed at organising the sector and curbing severe river pollution in Manica province.
As Domingo witnessed on site, approximately 20 companies and two artisanal mining cooperatives are expected to be notified today. It remains unclear what methodology will be used to ensure that the more than 10,000 miners operating in Manica comply with the suspension order.
According to information obtained from Ângelo Pinto, Inspector of Mineral Resources and Energy, the companies affected by the decision may only carry out equipment maintenance (within their respective worksites) and maintain security services “until further notice.”
Although the Council of Ministers’ decision was made public last Tuesday afternoon and was stated to take immediate effect, some companies continued operating as usual, claiming they had not been “formally notified” — a situation Ângelo Pinto says will be resolved through the notifications issued yesterday and continuing today.
