Suspected outbreak of FMD: Restrictions on animal movement imposed

The movement of cattle, goats, pigs and sheep destined for breeding from Tete province has been prohibited following a suspected outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Chifunde district, on the border with Malawi and Zambia.

The episodes were reported on 31 March, necessitating the ban on the movement of animals in the districts of Angónia, Dôa, Tsangano, Marávia, Chifunde, Macanga, Tete city, Moatize and Zumbo.

The National Directorate of Livestock Development (DNDP) has also prohibited the movement of cattle fodder from the districts of Chifunde and Macanga, and the concentration of animals for any purpose without the permission of veterinary authorities.

The movement of animals in the rest of the country is only allowed if they have been inspected, and so long as other procedures for their internal transit and that of their products are observed, such as acquiring authorization and the certificate of the means of transport from the National Directorate of Livestock Development (DNDP).

The only exception to these restrictions is the movement of animals from fenced farms in the districts affected for slaughter, after inspection of the animals and fences by veterinary authorities.
