The Vice President of the Association of Zambezia Carriers has accused Renamo of demanding illicit payments from semi-collective carriers on public roads through its armed men.
Baduro Alfredo Henriques made his accusation on Monday (July 19) in Quelimane when he was asked about claims by members of the public using semi-public transport that government forces had demanded illicit on roads in Morrothone zone, Mocuba district and Morrumbala.
According to Henriques, charges of money extortion referred to armed Renamo men and not Defence and Security Forces (FDS), contrary to the reports provided by passengers and carriers. In Henriques’ opinion, government forces are positioned to maintain public order and security and protect the wellbeing of passengers, not to cause them harm.
Baduro went further, claiming certain people were putting out speculative information aimed at tarnishing the good name of the government, and that those who were actually collecting money were armed Renamo men, and mainly in Morrumbala in Zambezia.
Diário da Zambézia however reports that people in Zambezia have been complaining about illicit payments being demanded on public roads by both armed Renamo men and Defence and Security Forces, and many carriers have ceased operating for fear of worse.
Carriers have also been the target of military attacks.
