The Mozambican government says that it will continue to provide financial support for youth initiatives this year, allocating “an additional one million to the 33 million invested last year,” O País reports. The government also support from the United Nations Population Fund [UNFPA], adds the same source..
This information was shared on Monday [15-02] after the first ordinary session of the Intersectorial Committee for the Development of Adolescents and Youth, during which the government reviewed last year’s actions targeting youth in the country.
Secretary of State for Youth and Employment Osvaldo Petersburgo reported that the meeting was not conclusive from the point of view of plans for the year 2021, only advancing that the government will add one million meticais to the 33 million already allocated.
It is important to understand that “this is only in the Youth Initiatives Support Fund, but there are many other activities that impact on youth” that also “need investment”, Petersburgo explained. Youth will have different support in different areas, in addition to the amount announced.
In this regard, the government will have the support of the United Nations Population Fund, which was also present as a cooperation partner, as were other youth support organisations, at the meeting led by Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosária, the committee coordinator.
Andrea Marie Wojnar, resident representative of the United Nations Population Fund, said the fund had US39 million, “but that includes health aid, gender, as well as programs, humanitarian support and data from the National Statistics Institute”.
Forgotten provinces in youth sexual and reproductive health programmes
The Secretary of State for Youth and Employment, Oswaldo Petersburgo, said that Gaza, Manica, Tete and Niassa provinces were receiving less attention from the government in the field of youth sexual and reproductive health programmes.
In response, the CIADAJ meeting recommended that the organ’s provincial delegations should be reactivated in 2021, including governors, provincial secretaries of state, district administrators and all other local structures.
