The Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Unit of Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), on Thursday received a delivery of essential open heart surgery consumables from Cornelder Mozambique (CdM), concessionaire of the container and general cargo terminal at the Port of Beira, within the scope of its corporate social responsibility programme.
These are essential components for the cardiopulmonary bypass machine used during open-heart surgery, without which it cannot work.
Adriano Tivane, director of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Services of HCM, says the bypass machine is the most expensive part of open heart surgery, accounting for about eighty percent of the costs of the entire process.
“Performing this type of surgeries requires a lot of resources, providing which is the responsibility of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Services. This has only been possible with the support of partners such as Cornelder Mozambique,” Tivane reports.
“These consumables meet our needs, because they are not only expensive but also reusable. It is a qualitative leap that will allow Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Services to increase their capacity next year,” he added.
HCM Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery performs on average 50 open-heart operations per year, “but with the material offered by Cornelder Mozambique we can do more. Our desire is to reach between 65 and 70 patients per year, starting in 2018”, Tivane said.
António Libombo, deputy executive director of Cornelder Mozambique, explained that supplying these consumables was aimed at ensuring that disadvantaged citizens had access to health care, particularly cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.
“Health is a very important asset and Cornelder Mozambique is proud to have been associated with this cause since 2014,” Libombo said, promising continued support in the coming years. “The reports of surgeries we have received (from Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Services) indicate that our support has been helpful. The equipment has been well applied and this encourages us to continue to provide this support,” he added.
Cornelder Mozambique is a partner of the Ministries of Health and Human Education and Development, having conceived and implemented several projects in the two areas throughout the country.
