A student in the administrative post of Chimthopo in Mágoè district has died on his way to Zumbo secondary school, 33 kilometres from his home.
Chimthopo is more than 250 kilometres from the administrative centre of Mágoè district and has only a primary school, leaving students unable to continue their studies unless they travel 66 kilometres per day, crossing the Zambezi River by canoe, to the headquarters of the neighbouring Zumbo district, where there is a secondary school.
According to Radio Mozambique, the dead student did the 66-kilometre round trip by bicycle but failed to drink water enough to combat the intense heat. Another student narrowly escaped death as he was rescued by the Chimthopo community.
Residents are petitioning for a secondary school in the region to prevent any repetition of the event in future.
