A strategy is being developed to improve Mozambique’s coffee sector through the promotion of competitiveness and the discovering of more realistic statistics for the planning and production of this crop in Mozambique.
This instrument will implement an investment plan in the coffee sector and meet producers’ requests for greater clarity in the value chain in this area.
The information comes from the head of the Department of Rural Technologies at the National Directorate of Local Economic Development, Tiago Luís, who also said that the promotion of coffee growing has the support of overseas concerns.
Tiago Luís was recently speaking at an event organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER), as part of the celebration of International Coffee Day, an opportunity to reflect on the crop’s potential for generating foreign exchange.
Coffee is among the most traded raw materials in the world, alongside oil, natural gas, gold and sugar. Currently in Mozambique, crop production occurs mainly in the provinces of Manica, Sofala and Cabo Delgado.
Mozambique joined the International Coffee Organization (ICO) around a year ago, a platform that offers opportunities to access technical assistance and compete in more demanding global markets.
Joining this body allows national producers to benefit from new market opportunities to grow their businesses.
The development of the strategy is supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), through the Project for Improving the Inclusive and Sustainable Development of Agro-Value Chains.
This action is part of the government’s commitment to boosting coffee production, fulfilling the role of developing policies, strategies and responding to requests from stakeholders regarding the need to structure the crop’s value chain.
The expectation is that Mozambique will create a coffee industry capable of generating economic benefits, improving the lives of actors and positioning the country as a relevant player in the market for that crop.
