Exclusive-Trump administration moves to restore some terminated foreign aid programs, sources say
A deadly storm has killed five people and injured 39 others in Boane district, about 30 kilometres south-west of the Mozambican capital Maputo, an official said Sunday. Boane district administrator Teresa Mahuai told APA that the catastrophic incident occurred after a prolonged severe drought devastating Maputo province and many parts of the southern African region.
She said those killed met their deaths through electrocution, fallen houses and trees that were uprooted by the heavy rains that were accompanied by strong winds.
The official said the worst-hit area was the Marien Nguabi neighbourhood where there was a lot of damage.
“Many houses were left with fallen walls or without ceiling. There were destructions also in schools and hospitals,” she said.
Mahuai warned “people not to seek refugee under trees whenever there is rain and thunderstorm” and called for support in rebuilding the affected areas.
“All of us must rally support for our brothers and sisters who are suffering,” she said.
Mozambique is among other southern Africa nations experiencing the worst dry spell in almost 35 years. The southern African nation is cyclically hit by natural calamities such as heavy flooding, cyclones and droughts.
