Mozambique: Chronic malnutrition affects 37 per cent of children in Sofala

The Mozambican government and the World Bank launched a national development statistics project estimated at US$62 million in Maputo on Friday.
The project will be implemented by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in partnership with the World Bank, which funds the initiative. The Ministries of Economy and Finance and Transport and Communications are also involved.
Speaking at the launch, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Manuela Rebelo, said that the project would complement the government efforts to improve planning, data collection and analysis.
The project would also help in the “dissemination of data and creation of technical and human capacity for the production of statistical information planning of integrated spatial development and design of a database on external flows”.
Rebelo explained that the project was part of reforms that would enable the government to design a new database on external aid flows, linking the processes of planning, budgeting and debt management and implementation of expenditure, monitoring and evaluation of projects.
“As a government, we would like to express our optimism and expectation about the results we intend to achieve in the first five years of the project we launched today,” he said.
She said that “among other results, we expect to draw up and approve the strategic plan of the national statistical system 2020/2024 and improve statistical operations, according to international standards”.
World Bank’s regional representative, Mark Lundel, said the initiative aimed to improve the production and dissemination of socio-economic statistical information of the country.
“This launch marks the culmination of a process that resulted, first, in the approval by the Board of Directors of the World Bank Group last January of a US$62 million grant for the project. In view of this, I would like to acknowledge the contribution of Mozambican government teams,” he said.
The president of the INE Board of Directors, Rosario Fernandes, said that the project aimed to strengthen capacity in spatial development planning using a geographic information platform designed as an integrated planning tool for economic and social development and decision-making.
