Mozambique: Japan pledges to continue supporting victims of terrorism
Cabo Delgado, 17 August 2022
Today, we are pleased to report a significant achievement in the peace process. The demobilisation of 444 former combatants, and the closure of the Renamo base in Montepuez district, Cabo Delgado province. This marks the thirteenth base closure to take place, and, with this development, the disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration (DDR) process has reached 77% of all DDR beneficiaries. These women and men are now on their reintegration journey into civil society.
The stabilisation of the security situation in the province over the last year made today’s achievement possible, and this base closure provides us with renewed hope that peace and stability is returning to the region. It is also a reflection of how the country’s model of building peace through national and regional solutions is working.
As has been the case throughout the DDR process, the decision to proceed with the base closure was jointly agreed by the Government and Renamo, with field activities supervised by the Military Affairs Commission and the Joint Technical Groups. We commend the continued positive collaboration between the Government and Renamo.
As we near the conclusion of the disarmament and demobilisation stage of implementation of the Maputo Accord for Peace and National Reconciliation, we must continue our efforts to support reintegration. Peace in Mozambique brings benefits to all sectors of society, and all stakeholders can contribute to embedding peace. Supporting the longer-term reintegration needs of these historically marginalised women and men in the spirit of building an inclusive peace is key to consolidating definitive peace and national reconciliation.
The United Nations remains committed to supporting the people of Mozambique in building a more prosperous future.
