The Mozambican state is “unequivocally committed” to fighting corruption, declared Attorney-General Beatriz Buchili in Maputo on Thursday.
At the ceremony where she swore prosecutor Bernardo Duce into office as the new director of the Sofala Provincial Office for the Fight against Corruption, Buchili said corruption “endangers social and economic development projects and damages the image of the State itself”.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office, she added, has taken the battle against corruption as a top priority.
As the Sofala provincial anti-corruption director, she added, Duce must do all in his power to implement the recently approved five year plan for preventing and combating corruption. She expected him to bring “new dynamism and strength” to the Sofala office.
Buchili stressed that among the Mozambican public there is a general perception of high levels of corruption in state institutions, including in the police force, in the courts, and among prosecutors and lawyers. Some people in the justice system “are compromising the entire collective effort to establish the confidence of citizens in public institutions”.
She hoped that Duce “will be able to help rescue the credibility of our institution”, by taking into account “the basic principles that guide the operations of the public administration”.
Buchili also wanted him to work “as a leader who stands out for his humility, transparency, discipline and spirit of mission”.
Duce, she said, already has wide experience in fighting corruption. He has worked for several years in the Central Office for the Fight against Corruption (GCCC), coordinating its preventive area.
