Xipamanine sellers are eager for new spaces to develop commercial activity, and city council officials have already destroyed old stalls inside the market.
The destruction of the stalls prompted a reaction characteristic of normal days at the market, but this time the reason was different: it was the vendors demanding new spaces for commercial activity.
A sturdy police presence ensured there was no room for vandalism of any kind.
The ladies seen in the report below were desperately seeking to put their names on the list to allocate space. Of the previous stalls, only debris remained, and the sound of machines.
Inside the market, Maputo municipality personnel worked feverishly to reorder the stalls. The empty walkways and closed stalls demonstrated that the municipality’s writ held supreme, but uncertainty remained nonetheless.
This Wednesday marks the last day of the suspension of activities at the Xipamanine market.
