Despite being involved in the battle for the Portuguese League and the Portuguese Cup, Sporting is already preparing for next season. One of the players who should remain at Alvalade is Geny Catamo. However, the Lions do not even have the majority of the Mozambican winger’s transfer rights, as 75% belongs to Amora.
According to the Portuguese newspaper Record, Sporting and Amora recently resumed talks regarding the Mozambican international. The same source added that representatives from both clubs have already met more than once and are preparing a new round of negotiations at the end of the season.
Amora president José María Gallego confirmed “good harmony” in the process, highlighting the role of Bernardo Palmeiro, who has been appointed Hugo Viana’s successor as Sporting’s general director. “The relationship with Bernardo is very good. His attitude towards Amora has always been one of respect,” the Spanish director said.
Geny Catamo began his career at Maxaquene and Black Bulls, both clubs in Mozambique. He later entered Portugal through Amora. Despite his short stay – he moved to Sporting after one season – the club from the Setúbal district still holds 75% of his rights.
In 2020, Sporting’s SAD failed to meet the deadline to acquire Geny Catamo’s entire rights, for €600,000. Since then, it has never been possible to reach an agreement with Amora. In October last year, they asked for €5 million for their share, taking into account the player’s increased value.
To complicate matters further, the Black Bulls Association, of which Catamo was also part, is now claiming ownership of 85% of the 75% stake currently controlled by Amora. The combination of all these disputes has complicated negotiations.
