Mozambique: Zambézia expects to produce more than 145,000 tons of rice

Throughout Nampula, sporadic, unpredictable rain has compromised the growth of crops, and this year’s provincial government target of 8.8 million tons of produce may not be reached.
“The rain in Nampula this year has been irregular, unlike last season when, with good rainfall, we achieved eight million tons of production,” Nampula governor Victor Borges says.
The provincial government wants to take advantage of all available water to address the situation. “Let’s use whatever water is available during this first agricultural season to produce something. Whatever rain is falling, let’s use it and we’ll see what awaits us in the second season of the agricultural campaign, where we may be able produce more,” Borges says.
According to the governor, it will be necessary to find alternative means like irrigation and dams to deal with the situation.
Nampula had this year planned for two million hectares under cultivation, of which only seven thousand are irrigated.
