Commander-General of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) Bernardino Rafael on Sunday conducted the installation of an ‘independent company’ of the Border Guard Police in the district of Montepuez, Cabo Delgado province.
It is yet another action in the search for “effective and sustainable” means in the fight against terrorism, at a time when reports of armed incursions are beginning to emerge in Montepuez district.
In addition to terrorism, Bernardino Rafael also spoke of the need to protect natural resources, particularly the district’s rich deposits of precious and semi-precious stones.
In fact, according to the General Commander of the Police, many foreigners enter Mozambique, exploit the resources and then use the money to finance terrorism.
“They’ve been here. Once they get [the stones], they sell them and sponsor terrorism,” Rafael said at the ceremony.
The ‘independent units’ of the Special Forces of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, which specialise in the defence and protection of the national territory and its resources, were launched In November last year in 12 districts of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambézia, Inhambane and Niassa provinces.
The pilot phase covered the districts of Palma, Nangade, Mocímboa, Muidunbe and Quissanga in Cabo Delgado; Marrupa and Mecula in Niassa; Memba and Moma in Nampula; Pebane and Gurué in Zambézia; and Inhassoro in Inhambane.
