South32 regrets to inform that two of our colleagues, Mr Cristovão Alberto Tonela and Mr Alfredo Francisco Domingos João, both employees at the Mozal aluminium smelter in Mozambique, were fatally injured on 7 November 2022. A contractor was also seriously injured in the same incident and is receiving treatment.
We would like to express our sincere and deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased following this devastating incident. We are providing support and counselling to help them through this difficult time, as well as supporting our injured colleague and the Mozal team.
Reduction operations in Potroom A at Mozal have been suspended and an investigation into the incident is underway. Learnings will be shared across South32 to understand how we can prevent a similar incident occurring again in the future.
