The government of Mozambique took delivery yesterday of 2,500 Covid-19 testing kits, a donation from the Republic of South Korea.
The kits were handed over to Mozambican Minister of Health Armindo Daniel Tiago by the South Korean ambassador to Maputo, Sung-jun Yeo, in a ceremony at the Ministry of Health (MISAU).
The testing kits are destined for the National Health Institute (INS), an institution under the supervision of MISAU, which is spearheading the Covid-19 testing process in Mozambique.
“It is with great pleasure that we receive this donation from the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Sung-jun Yeo. The Republic of Korea is a country that has been a friend of Mozambique since the time of the armed struggle for national liberation, and to this date has remained a faithful partner at critical moments,” the Minister of Health said in his speech.
Tiago praised the fact that, although South Korea is also beset by the pandemic, the Korean government and people had found it within their means to support Mozambique, and particularly the INS, in its efforts to secure more widespread testing.
Ambassador Sung-jun Yeo said that the Korean people could not remain unaffected by the situation of their brothers and sisters in Mozambique.
“As a brother country, we have a moral duty to support Mozambique and its people, a country with which we have had very good relations since colonial times,” the diplomat said.
Sung-jun Yeo added that Korea was hoping to get 3,000 more testing kits to Mozambique should they become necessary.
With a potential testing capacity of 600 samples per day, the INS laboratory currently has just over 20,000 testing kits available.
