South Africa’s police minister Fikile Mbalula appointed Yolisa Matakata as the acting head of the powerful Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks on Thursday.
The High Court in Pretoria said in March that the appointment of the previous head of Hawks, Berning Ntlemeza, was unlawful and must be revoked.
Mbalula on Wednesday withdrew an appeal lodged by the former minister of police to fight the court order to remove Ntlemeza.
