Tanzania opposition leader Tundu Lissu defiant as he appears for treason trial
A survey conducted by African NGO Afrobarometer claims that more than 60 percent of South African respondents said they do not like immigrants.
While the vast majority of Africans shows a high tolerance to people of different ethnic groups (91 percent), people of different religions (87 percent), immigrants (81 percent) and people living with HIV/Aids (68 percent), the research indicates that South Africans are less tolerant of immigrants, and would prefer to have gay neighbours.
The growing intolerance of South Africans towards immigrants, especially Africans, was publicly manifested in attacks that killed more than 60 people in 2008 and last year. But South African leaders downplayed the attacks, saying that they were isolated criminal acts and that South Africans are hospitable and tolerant.
South Africans justify their intolerance towards migrants saying they are responsible for crime and the lack of employment in the country.
Mozambicans living in Soweto, outside Johannesburg, say they are disappointed with the attitude of South Africans.
The study sampled 2,400 people and has 95 percent statistical validity. Cape Verde is the country most tolerant of homosexuals (75 percent) while Mozambique is the third most tolerant country in Africa towards the LGBT community (56 percent).
