Mozambican police have arrested a South African citizen trying to return to his country in possession of 55 cattle stolen in Mozambique, the corporation said today.
The man and his accomplices had stolen the cattle in Maputo province, southern Mozambique, and was caught trying to leave Matutuíne district for South Africa, police spokesman for Maputo province Carminda Leite told public broadcaster Radio Mozambique.
Leite said that two other men involved in the enterprise managed to escape the police operation.
The arrest was part of the Mozambican authorities’ efforts to stem the wave of cattle rustling in the country, Leite added. Cattle stolen in Mozambique are often smuggled into neighbouring countries prior to being sold.
