Former Mozambican finance minister Manuel Chang will be extradited to the United States of America (USA) earlier this week, to answer for his involvement in the hidden debt scandal, an official source told Lusa today.
“Yes, we can confirm that he will be extradited to the US this week,” Athlenda Mathe, spokeswoman for the South African Police National Command (SAPS), told Lusa.
“He was arrested in South Africa, we will hand him over to the FBI this week acting in accordance to an extradition request,” the spokeswoman said.
According to Athlenda Mathe, Manuel Chang, who was Mozambique’s Minister of Economy and Finance between 2005 and 2015, will be transferred “on Monday or Tuesday” by the FBI [Federal Bureau of Investigation], in a special plane, after four and a half years detained in a prison in South Africa .

The extradition of Manuel Chang to the United States until July 10 was communicated to the parties by the South African authorities on June 30, according to a communication from the Johannesburg Public Prosecution to which Lusa had access.
“The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has been informed by Interpol in Pretoria that they are in contact with the ‘US Marshall Service’ and that Mr. Chang will be handed over to US authorities during the period 8-10 July 2023. This was also confirmed by Ms. Lerner of the United States Department of Justice”, reads the note consulted by Lusa.
