South Africa: Teachers Union disagrees with COVID-19 school infection numbers

The National Teacher’s Union is refuting the government’s number of pupils and teachers who have contracted COVID-19.
Its President Allen Thompson says the figures are way beyond 1,500.
“We estimated that more than 4,000 people have been infected now and we will be able to give evidence to the department why are we saying the information they have is not correct.
“We are on the ground we are getting reports. We have got teachers who say they have tested positive but they have just been told to remain at home,” said Thompson.
“There are also reported cases of learners but those cases are not counted as people who have been infected while they are in the schooling system.”
The union leader raised concerns about shortages of PPE and lack of access to running water at schools and proposed quarantine facilities be used as venues for teaching Grade 12 pupils.
