With almost 15% of the provincial ballot and 12.16% of the regional ballot counted in Gauteng, the ANC is struggling to reach the 40% mark.
According to projections, the ANC is likely to lose control of Gauteng, with the party at 37.98% just before 13:00.
The DA was at 27.78%, with the EFF and MK Party battling for the position of third-largest party in the province.
By 13:00, the MK Party had 10.24%, and the EFF was sitting at 10.9%.
A total of 352 905 votes had been counted at the time.
The latest results came just a day after the ANC’s Gauteng chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, told News24 the party would surprise many. He also downplayed the possibility of a coalition government in Gauteng.
The ANC is leading in the City of Tshwane, with 40.86% of the total votes.
The party is also leading in Mogale City (35.45%), the City of Johannesburg (30.3%), Ekurhuleni (33.58%), Lesedi (44.9%), Randwest (52.8%), Merafong (46.11%), and Emfuleni (35.07%).
The DA is leading in Midvaal (57.62%).
The MK Party’s Gauteng coordinator, Thabang Nkani, said: “It’s still early… we hope we are going to stay on top, especially here in Gauteng, we have worked very hard. We witnessed everything yesterday. People were frustrated, but we expect to be on top, nothing less than 50%.”
The DA’s Mike Moriarty said:
There was no doubt that Gauteng was gone for the ANC. People are asking if they could get over 50% of people, but I’m going to tell you they are going to struggle to go over 40%. It’s hard to say for the DA, but we hope for somewhere north of 30%. There is a ding-dong going on, and we might be 10% points behind, but it depends on the factor or turnout.
“What we do know is that turnout in areas where the DA had won wards in the local government elections or the DA strongholds, have a turnout of about 70%, whereas in Soweto, we are looking at around about 55% – that difference is going to make our margin much closer, whether it will get us above the ANC, I don’t know,” Moriarty added.
He said the DA was excited to see that voters had rejected the ANC.
“There is a huge rejection of the ANC as a government. One very pleasing aspect was that people were prepared to stand in queues for hours, despite all the fiasco. People were determined – and, as the DA, we are very grateful,” said Moriarty.
