South Africa: Principals of schools with poorest results to go

Principals at the four worst-performing Gauteng schools will be axed, the province’s education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said on Wednesday, a day after the 2015 matric results were made public.

Mr Lesufi was speaking at a technical briefing on the 2015 matric results in Randburg.

“The principals of those schools have kissed their principalships goodbye,” said Mr Lesufi.

Gauteng’s 2015 matriculants got the highest number of bachelor passes at 38,000, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at just under 34,000.

Gauteng got a 84.2% pass rate, slightly less than 2014’s 84.7%. Of the 90,000 pupils who wrote the exams in the province, 17,000 failed but Mr Lesufi urged them not to lose heart.

He said pupils will be re-skilled through the provincial education department’s Tshepo 500,000 programme, which is designed to create employment opportunities for the youth.

Sedibeng East (90.4%), Gauteng West (90.1%) and Ekurhuleni South (83%) were the province’s top-performing districts, while Johannesburg Central was the worst.

Mr Lesufi said the province needs to support Johannesburg Central.

Head of department Edward Mosuwe said the number of full-time pupils writing the National Senior Certificate exams had increased by 10,000 between 2014 and 2015.
