JUST IN: Rail traffic reopens on Mozambique's Goba line
The South African Minister of Police Bheki Cele said yesterday he would visit Maputo soon to discuss with the Mozambican authorities the theft of motor vehicles in South Africa and consequent smuggling into Mozambique.
Cele said he has been in Mozambique recently and witnessed numerous stolen luxury vehicles with Gauteng registration numbers being driven around Maputo.
“”They do not even change the number plates there … I wont tell you who drives them, but I can tell you that a lot of the stolen Gauteng cars are being driven freely in the streets of Maputo with no problem. I will be meeting with authorities there soon to attend to this issue,” he said.
Speaking in Ekurhuleni, eastern Johannesburg, the minister said that about 22,000 cars were stolen in South Africa annually, and that most were smuggled across land borders into neighbouring countries.
South African police and other security officials have recently strengthened operations following an unprecedented wave of cash in transit robberies using explosive in the country.
The South African Minister said police had arrested 42 suspects since June, including “four of the country’s 15 most wanted criminals.”
