South African authorities last week deported 108 Mozambicans who were in the country illegally, a report on activities by the National Migration Service (Senami) of Mozambique that Lusa had access to on Monday reveals.
The deported individuals are all men and are aged between 18 and 45, the document states. One hundred were repatriated via the Ressano Garcia border and eight at Ponta do Ouro, both in the southern province of Maputo.
Outstaying residence permits and lack of documents were the two main causes of the deportations. Under current visa waiver agreements, citizens of both countries can only remain on casual visits in the territory of the other for 30 days.
South Africa is home to the largest Mozambican expat community, with over two million Mozambicans there, mostly working in the formal and informal sectors. The two countries share an extensive border.
