Soldier suspected of child rape flees

A military officer assigned to the Mozambican Area Force is said to have gone on the run after being detained by the police and accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old child in the Maputo’s Maxaquene neighbourhood.

The incident allegedly happened in a rented residence where the defendant lived with his wife. As soon as the case became common knowledge, the couple left the house with their belongings, their whereabouts at the moment unknown.

The parents of the victim reported the incident to the police and the girl was taken for medical examinations to Mavalane General Hospital, where it was confirmed that she had been raped.

The child reported that she was at the alleged rapist’s house watching television when the accused left the room and called his wife to come to him. After some time, the lady returned to the room alone and continued to watch the television program with the girl. The girl fell asleep and said later that she woke up in the grip of her offender, who is over 30 years old.

“I was asleep in the living room when Uncle Brigido who woke me up. He covered my mouth and squeezed my neck. I fainted and I do not remember what happened next,” the child reported.

She said that when she regained consciousness later she realized that she was somewhere in the yard of the defendant’s house.

Arriving home covered in sand and with injuries to parts of her body, she was questioned by her mother about what had happened, but tried to hide that she had been sexually abused out of fear.

She only told the truth after much insistence from her parents, who then went to confront the accused, who was a neighbour. The suspect was arrested by the police but is currently on the run and at whereabouts unknown.

In a similar case, a 26-year-old teacher was arrested last week in Zavala district, Inhambane province, for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

The teacher, also a neighbour of the victim, blackmailed the girl with failing the academic year. Copulation took place at night in a tent near their homes, and the accused was only detained after the child’s parents intervened.
