Forestry operators in Sofala province have asked the Sofala Secretary of State to ban the import of wooden furniture as a means of promoting sector industrialisation.
The request came during a meeting to announce operators’ results, and backs the loggers’ argument that the establishment of timber industries in the province would facilitate the production of furniture locally and contribute to a reduction in exports.
Secretary of State for Sofala Stela Pinto Zeca said the forestry operators’ concerns were legitimate, and that the revision of the Forest Law currently underway would address them.
Sofala province this year has 78 forestry operators, 37 of whom have simple licenses, 13 of them for wood stakes and bamboo, and 24 forestry concessions.
