Mozambique: Tensions are lowering - president
Social network users are saying there is a plot to assassinate Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama in a an assault this week on the Santujira base in Gorongosa, where the Renamo leader is suspected to be hiding.
Unay Cambuma, the source of the information and well known for his social networks profile, reports that war material to be used in the assault was being unloaded in Beira port on Sunday February 21.
Newspaper Autarca could not confirm this information from port sources contacted by the paper.
President Filipe Nyusi was quoted last week by the press in Maputo as talking about the limits of tolerance for the current military-political scenario in the country.
Also last week, the former Archbishop of Beira and mediator of the Rome agreements, Bishop Jaime Pedro Gonçalves, was quoted criticizing the head of the Mozambican state for allegedly visiting Angola to learn how the Angolan regime eliminated the Unita leader, Jonas Savimbi, supposedly with the intention of repeating the process with Afonso Dhlakama.
Public opinion in Beira however continues to advocate dialogue to overcome the political differences between the government and Renamo, advising at all costs against the use of military force, the results of which have been disastrous for Mozambicans.
Commentators point out that defense and security forces deployments have proved a counterproductive strategy, prompting only a bellicose response from Renamo.
