130 interns received their certificates of completion last week after completing a 6-month Beluluane JOBA internship in numerous companies based in Maputo province. This is the second group of interns to benefit from the programme aiming to mitigate the lack of employment opportunities and provide Mozambican youth with the skills and capabilities to join the job market.
The programme is funded by UK Aid and implemented by Beluluane Industrial Park acting as an intermediary establishing links between the companies and interns. Interns receive 6 months of on-the-job training, earning a salary, getting mentorship, as well as having the opportunity to prove themselves to potential employers.
Commenting at the event, Vicky Seymour, Head of DFID Mozambique said: “The UK government is proud to contribute to the reduction of employment barriers and turning young graduates into employees in Mozambique.
This ceremony is not only a defining moment and a transition from students to employees, it will also empower you.”
Onório Manuel, Deputy General Manager of Beluluane Industrial Park pointed out that the programme is a major opportunity to connect young skilled professionals to big companies. He addressed the interns: “We are extremely honoured to host a project of this kind and we hope it will continue for many years to come. Our hope is that you will differentiate yourselves in the market. We look forward to hearing from your future employers that they’re working with the best professionals”.
CEO of Capital Star Steel, David Scheepers mentioned that employers are a crucial component to the JOBA programme and that the coming years will bring unprecedented opportunities to young Mozambicans. Capital Star Steel has hired 25% of the interns trained. He went on to say: “The majority of these LNG projects coming will require skilled people like you. I believe you’re the most qualified people in this country ever”.

The JOBA programme Team Leader, Rosie Lugg said: “Training in high quality companies is a good way to start your careers. We trust you use the skills you developed to work hard and become the managers of the future and create jobs in companies for the future of Mozambique”.
Rosta Chambisso, an intern who worked in safety and health at the park said the programme provided her a unique opportunity, encouraging the founders to continue it, saying: “As you can see, a significant number of interns end up having permanent jobs in companies they’ve worked in as interns”.
Teresa Mauáie, Boane District Administrator also commented: “We hope you will be resourceful and will upgrade your skills in a continuous basis. We hope you can make the difference in your communities”.
