Six ministers of the current Mozambican government were among the new members elected to the Central Committee of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), the ruling party announced this Tuesday.
Standing out among the new members elected on Monday, the fourth day of the party’s 12th Congress, are Adriano Maleiane (Prime Minister), Max Tonela (Minister of Economy and Finance), Helena Kida (Justice), Ana Comoana (State Administration and Civil Service) Josefina Mpelo (Combatants) and Eldevina Materula (Culture and Tourism).
Also among the new members of the Frelimo Central Committee are Jacinto Nyusi, the eldest son of the current head of state, N’aite Chissano, son of former President of the Republic Joaquim Chissano, as well as Alberto Chipande Júnior, son of former Minister of Defence Alberto Chipande, a historic Frelimo member.
The newly composed committee comes into force during the Congress. The body has grown from 230 to 250 in number, with 60% of members carried over from the previous mandate and 40% entering the body for the first time.
Eighty-one Central Committee members joined the body during this Congress, most of them elected during the provincial conferences held earlier this month.
This Tuesday, the 12th Frelimo Congress will elect the party’s secretary-general, the Political Commission and the Verification Committee, the party’s disciplinary body, before proceeding with the revision of the party’s statutes.
After the congress, the new bodies will address the choice of candidate for the 2024 presidential elections.
