Mozambique Elections: Quelimane mayor calls for demonstrations throughout Zambézia from Friday ...
The situation in the small town of Nihessiue, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, has returned to normal, after a pre-dawn attack by gunmen of the rebel movement Renamo on Saturday.
Police in the provincial capital, Nampula city, assured AIM that people and goods are moving normally through the streets of Nihessiue. The police have sent a team of inquiry to assess the situation, and the Nampula provincial police spokesperson, Zacarias Nacute, said measures are being taken to ensure that there is no repetition of the attack.
“All the mechanisms have been created to ensure that people continue to live normally in that region, and in our province as a whole”, he added.
The raiders attacked the local health post, a police station, offices of the ruling Frelimo Party, and the home of the head of the Nihessiue administrative post. Property was stolen and windows smashes, but nobody was killed or injured.
Nacute said the Renamo group set fire to the Frelimo office and the police station. They stole bandages, birth kits, mosquito nets, sheets and scissors from the health centre, but did not burn it down. Information collected by the police indicated that there were ten raiders in the Renamo group, but only two of them carried AK-47 assault rifles.
Frelimo General Secretary Eliseu Machava, who is visiting Nampula, strongly condemned the attack. Any type of armed attack is a blow against Mozambique’s development, he said.
In the face of the current economic crisis, it was time to “strengthen unity among Mozambicans”, he declared, “and not to fire off shots to destabilize the country and cause panic among the people”.
“We condemn any type of armed attack, for whatever reason”, said Machava. “Renamo likes to kill, but we call on it to stop these, because the people are tired of Renamo’s attitude”.
