The management of Mozambican workers in South Africa in mines and on farms has been improved by the implementation of the Migratory Phenomenon Management System (SIMIGRA) at the Ressano Garcia border post in Maputo province.
SIMIGRA was installed last year by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MITESS) and covers the registration of all workers, their family, heirs, place of work and residence.
Noticias has learned that the system also reports workers’ complaints abroad and in cases of accidents, illness or death, for example, their relatives are easily identified.
Speaking during his visit to the Migration Department in Ressano Garcia, MITESS deputy minister Oswaldo Petersburgo encouraged officials to continue working to improve the services offered to Mozambican workers in South Africa.
“Even if we have state-of-the-art systems installed on our premises, if we do not have trained technicians who are willing to work there will be no change, so we encourage officials to be more committed to their mission,” Petersburgo said.
According to Eunice Chiongue, technician at the Migration Department of MITESS in Ressano Garcia, the system can handle more than 400 cases a day.

“We oversee miners and farm workers with one year visas and check employment contracts, signatures and their health cards. If everything is okay we send the user on to his or her place of employment,” she said.
Chiongue explained that another improvement was that SIMIGRA was an online system, so that in case of problems, the worker, the employer and family members could be quickly identified.
“Most of the complaints we have been receiving, for example, are related to delay in compensation payments for accidents at work, but with this system we have been able to discharge all the cases we have received,” she said.
