The shrimp catch has fallen dramatically over the past decade, Minister for the Sea, Inland Water and Fisheries Agostinho Mondlane said on Friday. Ten years ago, the country was landing about 10,000 tons of shrimp per year, but the catch has now fallen to around 3,000 tons.
According to Mondlane, the main reasons for the decline are illegal catching and the uprooting of marine mangroves for firewood. Mondlane pointed to a mangrove recovery plan for Maputo Bay and measures measures to protect the country’s coastline as part of efforts to restock.
