Three people died and 18 others were rescued when a fishing vessel sank off the Island of Mozambique in the northern province of Nampula on Tuesday.
The police in Nampula on Monday cited bad weather in the locality and overloading as the main causes of the incident.
“The sinking involved a fishing vessel and, in addition to the bad weather, the maritime subunit covering the area says that excess cargo in the vessel also contributed to the incident” spokesman of the Provincial Command of the PRM in Nampula, Zacarias Nacute, said.
At the force’s weekly press conference, Nacute also reported the death by drowning of a minor in the Memba region.
“The Memba drowning involved a boy less than two years old who, in circumstances yet to be established, fell into a well and lost his life, despite the best efforts of the PRM and local people,” Nacute said.
Other incidents included the deaths of eight people plus two seriously injured in seven road accidents reported in the province, and two deaths in rail accidents.
“The first [rail] accident happened in Nampula’s Namutequeliua neighbourhood, when a minor under the age of 11 was struck by a train, his body then being removed to the Central Hospital morgue. The second accident took place in Namige, in Mossuril, and involved a 49-year-old adult. These two accidents took place on Wednesday and Thursday last week,” Nacute said.
