Seventy Mozambicans are serving a life sentence in jails in South Africa’s Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces, South African judicial officials have said.
Mozambicans serving life sentences in the two South African provinces bordering Mozambique have been convicted of murder, rape and robbery.
In addition to those sentenced to life imprisonment, the Mpumalanga and Limpopo jails hold a total of 783 Mozambicans, including detainees awaiting trial. Of that number, 17 are female.
Poaching, robbery, assault, robbery, invasion and property damage and stay in South Africa illegally are among the crimes the Mozambicans awaiting trial are charged with.
