O País
Seventeen people were detained by police in southern Mozambique for involvement in riots in Manhiça on Sunday and Monday, after group of protesters destroyed ten vehicles and a house and even stopped traffic on National Road Number One, EN1, with police responding with tear gas.
The disturbance arose when rumours circulated that there was a human organ dealer in the village. Those detained were part of the group that burned down the house of the man suspected, who sought refuge at the police station.
Police say they have started an investigation into the incident.
Riots by crowd attempting to exact mob justice are frequent in Mozambique. In 2016, there were an average of two reported instances a week, 27 of which resulted in fatalities, according to figures from the Attorney General’s Office.
