A total of seven people drowned on Mozambique’s beaches over Christmas and the New Year.
Drownings were recorded on Fernão Veloso beach in Nampula province; at Inos in Cabo Delgado; at Nova and Veleiro beaches in Sofala province; in Bilene in Gaza province; and at Macaneta and Ponta do Ouro in Maputo province.
The information was provided by Leonid Chimarizene, spokesperson for the National Maritime Institute (INAMAR), in an assessment of festive season contingency planning.
During the period in question, 71 beaches nationwide were monitored and 17 maritime search and rescue operations were carried out – one in Gaza, 15 in Maputo province and one on the Island of Mozambique.
The Maritime Administration of Maputo, Chimarizene also reported, rescued 15 bathers on Ponta do Ouro beach, including three Indian nationals, five South Africans and seven Mozambicans. They were rescued by a team made up of INAMAR and Maputo National Park personnel and lifeguards.
During the same period, national maritime administrations adopted the mandatory safety measure of removing bathers from the water at 6:00 p.m..
Despite the success of the actions carried out, the supervisory authorities claim to have faced logistical limitations reaching difficult-to-access locations as a result of scarcity of means of transport.
Meanwhile, the plan is to continue to intensify maritime, lake and riverine inspection, in coordination with stakeholders.
