Seven bodies have been found dumped in the forest in the administrative post of Chinga, Murrupula district, in Nampula province. The discovery was made by local people, who immediately informed the authorities, who in turn authorised their immediate burial in the very place where they were found, O Pais reports.
The origin of the bodies, their identity and the cause of death of the seven have not been ascertained. Two of the dead are women.
Chinga is about 65 km from the village headquarters of Murrupula district, on a road through an almost uninhabited area, which may have facilitated the perpetration of the crime.
The bodies were found in dense forest with only one access road. Residents of the area said they heard a car engine around 10:30 p.m. last Thursday, but one of them, José Manuel, told O Pais that it had not been possible to identify the car.
“We couldn’t see the car – only the lights,” he explained “They made a turn by the school and then went on to leave the bodies in the bush there. It was almost 11 p.m.”
Diolindo Gabriel, a resident of nearest village, Muarrapaz, told O País the victims were not local. “None of the dead, five men and two women, were known locally,” he said.
The same Diolindo said the bodies, already buried in a common grave by decision of the local authorities, showed no marks of violence.
The discovery of these bodies has sparked a sense of insecurity in the neighbouring villages, especially Muarrapaz, a small village just a few kilometres away.
The police have as yet made no statement.
The district of Murrupula is bordered to the north, northwest and west by the Ribaué district, to the south by the district of Gilé (Zambézia province), to the east by the district of Mogovolas, and to the northeast by the district of Nampula. The district is divided into three administrative post: Chinga, Murrupula and Nehessine. The 2007 census indicated that the area then had a population of 140,311 residents. The district saw heavy clashes during the civil war and more recently registered some incidents at the time of the clashes between government forces and residual Renamo combatants.
