The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) this Tuesday presented an individual involved in the kidnapping of a citizen of Asian descent in Maputo on November 1, 2023. He was arrested on January 8th of this year.
According to corporation spokesperson Hilário Lole, the citizen in question was involved in orchestrating the crime.
Lole said that, to apprehend the kidnappers, SERNIC resorted to the vehicle registration stamping company where the vehicle used in the crime was registered.
“There are no doubts of his involvement in the preparatory acts for the execution of the kidnapping on November 1st,” Lole asserted.
Furthermore, he had access to the booklet [‘verbete’] under which the registration was registered, which was discovered to be a false document. The same license plate was registered on the ‘verbete’ of another vehicle.
The stamper provided SERNIC with bank details through which the registration issuance payments were made.
“He confesses to having requested the engraving of the registration plates, by way of a third party,” said Lole, noting that the ‘mastermind’ was already registered with SERNIC “as an individual involved in some cases of kidnappings in Mozambique and other territories” .
The citizen presented may also be involved in other cases of kidnapping in Maputo, according to the spokesperson. “He has links to an individual wanted in the national territory and considered one of the masterminds of the kidnapping cases, and who is currently detained in neighbouring South Africa,” Lole said.
The next step would be to validate the citizen’s incarceration before a criminal investigation judge, he concluded.
