The stoppage of coal transport trains on the Sena line in central Mozambique is causing substantial economic damage, with Minister for Transport and Communications Carlos Mesquita saying losses could top US$50 million.
Located in the centre of the country and connecting coal-rich Moatize with Mozambique’s second-largest sea port at Beira in Sofala Province, the 600 kilometer-long Sena line is vital for the development of Mozambique.
The line serves mainly large mining companies, especially Vale, and, following rehabilitation and modernization work that only ended this year, should now be operational, but because of attacks attributed to Renamo, Vale decided to halt all train movements.
The stoppage has so far lasted about two months, but Minister Mesquita says that discussions around getting the trains running again are now taking place. The minister said that he had held a meeting with a senior Vale manager and given guarantees regarding the involvement of Defence and Security Forces in protecting rail deliveries in an effort to allow rail operations to resume.
