Mozambican Defence Minister Salvador M’tumuke on Friday guaranteed that security in the country remains stable, despite the terrorist attacks carried out by groups inspired by Islamic fundamentalism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
He was speaking in Maputo at the opening of the annual meeting of defence attachés accredited in Mozambique, held under the theme “Defence and security forces of Mozambique empowering national security to guarantee sustainable development”.
“In general, the politico-military situation in the country is characterised by an environment of stability, arising from a series of positive factors, such as the prevalence of peace, the full functioning of public and private institutions, the free circulation of people and goods, and continuing exchange rate stability, in response to the measures taken by the government”, the Minister said.
M’tumuke added that, despite the attacks in Cabo Delgado, the Mozambican armed forces (FADM) are continuing to defend with determination the country’s national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He also stressed the efforts under way to achieve a definitive peace through the dialogue between President Filipe Nyusi and Ossufo Momade, leader of the former rebel movement Renamo. He noted the consensus attained between Nyusi and Momade on military questions which should lead to the successful demobilisation and disarming of the Renamo militia, and the integration of its members either into the defence and security forces, or back into civilian life.
M’tumuke also expressed “profound gratitude” to all those countries who had provided Mozambique with support to overcome the effects of the two powerful cyclones that had hit the country in March and April.
