Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Wednesday swore into office Maria de Fatima Manso as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Mozambican Communities Abroad.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony in Maputo, Chapo urged Manso to be the bridge that connects the heart of Mozambique “to its best sons and daughters around the world.”
“We know that our diaspora is a treasure trove of experiences, knowledge and affection, and it is our duty to strengthen these ties, ensuring that they feel supported, listened to and represented”, he said. “Keep in mind the noble value of serving, with dedication and effectiveness, our nation’s interests on the international stage and, in particular, the needs of our vast and dynamic community beyond our borders”.
According to Chapo, Mozambique needs to be recognized across borders as a welcoming nation, rich in culture and with immense potential, “and must be heard with clarity and respect in international forums.”
“Mozambique doesn’t just want to be recognized for its natural beauty and cultural wealth, but also for its ability to build strategic partnerships and defend our interests with assertiveness and intelligence”, he said.
The President stressed that diplomatic missions are crucial for promoting the country’s culture, identity and potential.
“The vision of economic diplomacy is one of the central gestures of our foreign policy”, he said. “We trust that with her energy and knowledge, the Secretary of State will play a crucial role in transforming our diplomatic representations into economic promotion centres, attracting investment, boosting trade and promoting the tourist and cultural potential of our beautiful Mozambique”, he said.
Among Manso’s previous positions are ambassador to China and consul in the Mozambican embassy in Lisbon.
