Two soldiers who were providing support during the floods in southern Mozambique disappeared after their boat sank on Wednesday in the Incomáti River, in the district of Manhiça, Maputo province, Radio Mozambique reported on Thursday.
The victims were part of a group assessing conditions for crossing the river to the administrative post in Calanga, access to which is restricted by the rising water levels.
The National Civil Protection Unit (UNAPROC) vessel was carrying four persons – the two soldiers deployed to support the population, and two government officials from Manhiça district.
The Manhiça officials were rescued alive on Wednesday and are receiving medical care.
The Permanent Secretary of Manhiça district, José Licuco, said on Wednesday that UNAPROC teams were searching for the two missing soldiers. They were still so occupied on Thursday.
“The vessel has already been recovered. It was found in a low-lying area near Calanga, completely flooded,” Licuco reported.
The Incomáti River is one of several in southern Mozambique that have overflowed in recent weeks due to heavy rainfall.
The country is in the middle of its October-April rainy season, with winds coming from the Indian Ocean and floods originating in the hydrographic basins of Southern Africa. Thousands of people have been affected by the associated bad weather already this year.
