The curricula adopted by schools that operate in Mozambique must be based on the noblest values of Mozambican-ness, regardless of the origin of the schools’ operators.
The recommendation was made on Monday in Matola by the Minister of Education and Human Development, Conceição Sortane, who said the history, geography, culture and other characteristic aspects of Mozambican national character should never be put aside in the name of the innovation that private educational establishments might wish to embody in their establishments.
Sortane was speaking at the opening of the Rocha Firme Academy, a private school covering pre-primary to 12th grades.
The school will teach the Love2Learn curriculum, a teaching and learning modality that links science and the Christian religion, offering, in addition to science, biblical education and teachings on human personality.
Sortane reiterated the call for all society to contribute to the “noble mission of educating” in different ways, such as through the construction of classrooms, opening of water holes, transportation of students and donations of teaching materials.
Director Emilio Dimande said the school would initially teach pre-primary to Grade 5, but hoped to extend that to Grade 12. The current facilities and human resources have a capacity of 84 students, 12 per classroom.
Matola mayor Calisto Cossa and Maputo governor Raimundo Diomba applauded the school’s choice of location and said they were open to contributing to its success.
South African Marc Ries, founder of the Love2Learn curriculum, said that the curriculum was now being taught in 25 countries around the world and had already shown that education with a divine dimension was the most powerful influence for positive change in the world.
