Bread-making, agricultural and livestock husbandry at Savane Open Penitentiary on the outskirts of Beira are helping alleviate the expense to the state of feeding those incarcerated, Noticias reports.
This is the assessment made by the managers and prison community:at the penitentiary establishment located in Nhangau administrative post, where there is an abundance of food such as vegetables, tubers, beans, chicken and pork, among others.
Responding to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, special attention is being given to the production of face masks, both for the prisoners themselves and for sale in the community.
Even using an artisanal oven, the Savane penitentiary produces bread on a large scale, enough for commercial supply to the surrounding communities.
In addition to these activities forming the daily occupation of inmates, the food also supports them, and helps them acquire knowledge that could represent an asset after they have served their sentences.
To help maximise production, the Savane inmates rely on the assistance of a network of agricultural extensionists and other technical experts.
