Niassa National Reserve is adopting innovative methods to combat the epidemic of elephant shootings. About 20 elephants have already been fitted with a collar which allows satellite monitoring of their location.
The technology involved will cost about US$100,000, but will make it easier to monitor the elephants’ movements and forms part of a drive to create a ‘maximum security’ protection zone within the conservation area.
