The Women in Accounting Programme by Sasol in Mozambique is an impactful initiative aimed at addressing gender inequality in the traditionally male-dominated field of Oil and Gas. This programme aims to play a crucial role in equipping young female accounting graduates with the skills and expertise necessary to thrive in the industry.
Launched with the goal of empowering and upskilling young women, the Women in Accounting Programme recruits female graduates for a two-year period and give them exposure to various accounting domains within the Oil and Gas sector. The candidates are exposed to areas such as Joint Venture accounting, Management Accounting, Financial Year-end Activities, and the intricacies of Petroleum Production Agreement (PPA) reporting, amongst others.
First recruit of the programme, Antuia Amade, joined Sasol in April 2023 and completed her tenure on 31 March 2025. Antuia gained invaluable experience in several key accounting areas. She described how the programme has helped her build professional confidence and maturity, and by the time she completed the programme as a skilled and experienced accounting professional.
In 2024, the programme expanded by adding three more participants: Arminda Bie, Karyna Rodolfo, and Nazirine Marques. These new recruits are exposed to the diverse accounting areas within Sasol, and their skills are expected to grow as the programme progresses.
Sasol’s Women in Accounting Programme goes beyond technical training, it is part of a broader effort to break down gender barriers in the workplace and promote equitable representation in the industry. The programme not only offers young women an opportunity to build essential professional skills but also helps to create a more balanced and diverse workforce in the Oil and Gas sector, where women are historically underrepresented.
By focusing on building skills and capabilities, the programme is not just about addressing gender disparities but also about empowering women to take on leadership roles in an industry that requires technical expertise and strategic thinking.
This initiative by Sasol is an example of how targeted programmes can uplift young women, provide equal opportunities, and contribute to the development of a more inclusive workforce. As more women gain experience in such programmes, the balance within the industry will continue to improve, benefiting not only the individuals involved but the industry as a whole.
